Preparing for a Tornado: Tips on How to Stay Safe and Protect Your Home

When it comes to natural disasters, tornadoes can be some of the most devastating weather events. Tornadoes can occur in any season, with peak tornado season being spring and summer. Because of their unpredictability and destructive power, it’s important to know how to prepare your home and family for a tornado so you stay safe should one approach your area.

First and foremost, stay informed. It’s important to monitor local weather reports, as well as use mobile applications or smartphone alerts that are available in many areas across the country. This way you can be aware of impending severe weather while you’re away from home. Additionally, if possible, sign up for emergency notifications from local authorities in your area if they are available.

Create an emergency kit for both at home and inside your vehicle. These kits should include items like flashlights; first aid kits; nonperishable food; water; battery operated radios; extra cash; copies of critical documents (including birth certificates and Social Security cards); blankets; warm clothing items like jackets and boots; pet supplies if applicable; medications/prescriptions that may be needed during an emergency situation; sunscreen (for protection from windburn); a whistle or other noise-making item (to signal authorities).

At home it is important to create an emergency plan with your family so that everyone knows what to do in case a tornado approaches while you’re either at work or school. Make sure each family member knows the location of all designated shelters throughout the house such as under stairwells, hallways or even a basement if accessible. Designate someone who can act as a point-of-contact once everyone is safely situated during the storm in case there is a need to communicate with family members who are not together when the storm occurs.

In terms of protecting your home itself, ensure all windows have been sealed properly with sturdy shutters or boards before severe weather hits if possible. Secure outdoor furniture such as patio tables, chairs or grills by tying them down outdoors or bringing them into an enclosed building until after the storm has passed by. Bring all vehicles into garages whenever possible, ensuring that all doors are closed securely behind them as well as any outdoor structures like sheds or barns on your property too - these will help protect from flying debris during high winds associated with tornadoes.

Tornadoes can unfortunately cause serious damage very quickly within seconds due to their unpredictable nature – but making preparations ahead of time before severe weather strikes will help keep you and your loved ones safe during such events should they occur near where you live!
